@elbie The NHS should not be given more money as it has consistently demonstrated that it does not provide a better service for it. The waste that I have seen at first hand in both community and acute services is eye watering and what made me angry is that the staff don’t even notice it any more. I confronted a surgical consultant as to why a patient in the same ward bay had not been discharged 2 days earlier because he forgot to fill in a form and the nurses and junior doctors were too afraid of him to chase after him. Two extra days in that ward £3k?

A focus on improvement (doing better/more with the same or less) and sorting out the culture in the NHS is what is needed. Organisations like Toyota focus on getting the quality right first, then worry about productivity/cost. A focus on what adds value to patients could make a massive improvement.

It is nobody’s “fault”. That is like saying “I don’t live in a 20 bedroom mansion, which is my fault for not being born to very rich parents or for not winning the lottery.”

Funding is not always the problem anyway. My wife manages three community nursing teams and has the budget that she needs for the patient numbers. However, she is short staffed by 10% and on the worst day in December, 20% of her staff were off sick. When she holds interview days for nurses and HCAs, she will have 8 candidates, of whom 2 won’t show up without explanation, 1 calls in sick on the day, 2 will be totally unprepared and unable to answer the easiest of questions, 1 sets her spider senses tingling (left last 2 jobs at very short notice and won’t say why) and the remainder are borderline. She makes them offers, but they turn them down as they have decided the location or hours aren’t what they want.

If you keep their run on grass you will have to watch them carefully because rabbits dig and can easily get out that way. They can also climb and jump, surprisingly! I had one inveterate escapologist who would actually leap over the side of his run so I had to make a secure roof for it.

Next time she asks just tell her you are terribly busy and really can only manage a couple of days over the weekend. If she wants to stay longer then fine, but could she use the B&B for extra nights as you need the evenings to catch up with work.

It’s very sad how money can change some people. I had an amazing friend, she was much older than me and was the mother I had always wanted. We would have meals together and she and her husband would visit here often.. I adored them. Then she inherited a considerable sum of money and changed completely from the warm, loving person she had been to one of these rather fake, brittle people who judges everyone and everything. Our time together was over… she now moved in a different crowd. I was terribly terribly hurt… as I imagine you are… and missed the real person so much. It was actually a relief when they moved away from the area. The conclusion I drew from this is that even the oldest and best friendships sometimes run their course and it’s time to step away before you become crushed by them.

Think carefully and consider whether or not you are getting anything from this friendship other than mild annoyance, a feeling of being used and sadness for the way she has changed.

I had a very vivid dream last night that I was working in an office with an old manual typewriter and couldn’t type a letter without making load of mistakes and having to keep using more paper and hiding the messed up stuff. This could probably relate to when I was about 18 and in my first job ! A very very long time ago. I often have dreams where I am trying to get somewhere and cant find my car, or trying to pack a suitcase and never finishing the job so I can catch a plane ! And the worst one where I am desperate for a wee and the only loo I can find is in a row of several in a room full of people, usually have to get up to have a real wee !

No. I’m another who keeps on working even when I’m sick – I work from home so I’m not infecting anyone!

In your position I’d be able to ask my manager for a day’s leave & make the time up on eves/weekends but my hours can be totally flexible.

@sar I agree – apart from Wayne Rooney and the like of course….
I really worry about those who either have no insight, or choose to ignore the warnings that some medications impair driving ability, placing themselves and in particular, others at risk.
Probably in a similar category, those who shouldn’t drink whilst taking certain medications (let alone drive). These people appear to struggle to understand why their medical complaint is not improving.
But each to their own, until you put others at risk with your behaviours.

Your GP will make a judgement about your health as you describe how you are feeling. S/he will not insist that you take medication, although that might be suggested. There are numerous ways of dealing with anxiety, either in conjunction with, or rather than, medication, which the dr should be able to help you access, although sometimes the waiting list is quite long. If your employer pays into an occupational health scheme, it would be worth your asking for a referral to them. They can often get access to therapies which don’t have such long waiting lists. If you do get a OH referral, please take someone else with you to the appointment, If you are a union member, ask a rep to accompany you.
I’m another who thinks that you could profitably look for a different job. Your employer doesn’t sound very supportive.
